JAEA has conducting a contract study on grouting performance with METI. This study was examined the applicability of various geophysical methods for understanding of grout penetration in sedimentary rock by laboratory testing as a part of the study. The results suggested that the resistivity and shear wave velocity may be effective to understand a grout penetration in sedimentary rock if the thickness of grout material in a fracture is over several mm.

In this paper, we showed brief overview of the international project on the development of numerical model for the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical processes (DECOVALEX-2011) and simulation results of the Ventilation Experiment at the Mont Terri Underground Rock Laboratory, Switzerland. The simulation results by developed model shows good agreement with data obtained from the measurements at site.

In this paper, the coupled thermal-mechanical processes in the pillar stability test carried out at the sp Hard Rock Laboratory were simulated using both 3D Finite Element Method (3D-FEM) and 2D Distinct Element Method (2D-DEM) with particles. The simulation results by 3-D FEM shows good agreement with the data obtained from the measurements at site. The simulated crack propagation during the excavation, pressurizing and heating processes by DEM with particles agrees qualitatively well with the observation. By comparing these results obtained from two different approaches, quantitative and qualitative insights into various aspects of the processes occurred in the near field can be obtained. This work is a part of Task B, DECOVALEX2011 project.

We have examined field examples of several kinds of troubles and their causes and measures on a deep borehole drilling. Moreover, frequency and characteristics focussing on the borehole collapse have been studed. As a result, many of collapse has been concentrated on the specific geological structure. Further studies should be needed on the accumulation of the troubleshooting examples on the deep borehole investigations and improvement of the risk assessment methodologies based on the three-dimensional geological model etc.
